Penybanc 12 Llandybie 29

Banc welcomed Llandybie for the first time in the last few years on Saturday. The fortunes of both clubs have changed somewhat this season with the visitors much improved over the last couple of seasons and looking a well drilled outfit while the Tigers are yet to hit their straps so far in this campaign. The game started in a physical manner with both sets of forwards going hammer and tongs. The visitors set their stall out with the first scrum with an almighty shove which Banc, who have scrummaged extremely well this season, did not expect. This yielded a penalty which was just missed. Banc were limited to chances to attack in the first quarter with the Llandybie defence impressing. Former Tybie full back Wayne Williams looked sharp against his old club making several half breaks as the half were on but again, the Llandybie defence was able to scramble and snuff out the danger. The visitors opened the scoring with a neat try in the corner and soon extended their lead with a breakaway try for a half time lead of 12-0.

Banc were a lot more direct in the second half but got a little too confident trying to run from their own line and a dropped pass was picked up for the visitors to extend their lead further.  It wasn’t long before the visitors got the all-important bonus point try much to the delight of the travelling support. The tigers were not done though and kept the pressure on, having the lion’s share of possession for the last half hour. A strong carry from lock Mathew Wrigley was stopped just short of the line and quick ball so impressive skipper Aled Danter power over from short range.  Further pressure from the hosts saw a couple of half breaks but no end result. Good work from Williams and centre Mikey Rees released co centre Keiran Ace who able to sprint 20 yards down the wing before managing to overpower the covering defence to register the Tigers second try. The final score was 29-12 to the visitors and you have to say it was fully deserved. They looked an impressive unit and we wish them well for the run in. It’s back to 6 Nations this weekend but we welcome high flyers Nantgaredig in our next league game on March 3rd.
