Penybanc 21 Llandeilo 15

For the second time in 3 weeks, Llandeilo were the opposition for the Tigers. Last time, a superb try for the Deilo centre in the dying minutes broke Banc hearts so the boys were determined to get the W this week. Unfortunately, for the first time this season, injuries and unavailability meant Banc were down to the bare bones but still, a strong squad took the field.

The visitors started well and used their big centre to gain yards. Both sides tried to move the ball in the early stages and from a Llandeilo attack, home wing; Will Griffiths was able to intercept to run in under the posts from 80 yards. Centre Mikey Rees added the extras. The away side came again and carried hard into the Banc defence before being awarded a penalty which was converted. Compared to the previous week, conditions were perfect and both sides continued to spread the ball with Rees and wing Christian Hughes making clean breaks. Acting fly half Owen Williams was pulling the strings superbly while up front, prop Shaun James and skipper Aled Danter carried well.

The second half started similarly to the first with that man Griffiths conjuring up a bit of magic to score a superb individual try. Rees added the conversion to extend the Banc lead.  Llandeilo knew they were in a game and maintained possession for the next period, adding two penalties to get themselves within a point. The Banc defence was still managing to hold them out however, despite being heavily penalised by the referee. With 10 minutes left, Llandeilo took the lead for the first time, with away full back Owain Roberts kicking his fifth penalty.

The game was now on a knife edge with minutes to go. Deilo cleared their lines only to find Banc full back Wayne Williams in space. After beating the first defender, a delightful chip ahead and some great footballing skills saw him collect and go over. Rees added the extras and moments later, the referee blew for full time. This was a great all round performance given the circumstances with the front row of Shaun James, Zac Rees and Mathew Wrigley giving a workmanlike 80 minute effort while the defensive effort was led superbly by flanker Cellan Harris. It’s back to league business this weekend as the Tigers make the short journey to Penygroes.
